Riding for Pleasure

Two things are needed to start cycling: a bicycle and a lot of enthusiasm. Once you start the other thing required is Motivation. Then you are ready to take advantage of all the opportunities cycling can offer. Everyone of us is busy in our day to day chores, so taking to cycling can be a daunting task. Especially when you are living in a bigger city where distances are huge and you can find less space to cycle around. Few cities in India have designated paths for cyclists. Ahmedabad is one of the city which has managed to make such paths, but unfortunately not in use as the maintenance is a big issue
Getting started, you need to consider which bike to ride, what to wear and how to ride in an urban environment. Good planning and preparation are the essential "Mantras". This would ensure that cycling is a positive experience for you!

Introduction to Cycling

The bicycle symbolizes freedom, mobility, independence and self-sufficiency. It is far more than a mode of transport- it is a recreation, a means to lifelong health and fitness, and the most environmentally friendly and efficient way of getting from one place to another.
Cycling is for all ages. a kid can use the cycle for fun or for a ride to school. you can participate in cycling at any level, be it for fun or taking part in competitions. With the development of a nation, the role of cycling has declined but  I see a change around happening. Cities like Amsterdam, Seoul have made cycling easy and a practical mode of transport for the general public. These cities have paved route for cyclists throughout. Seoul even has bikes given to the public for routine use and that too free of cost. I enjoyed cycling in Seoul during my training period in surgery in 2008. From that period I started cycling routinely.
Cycling has been one of the fastest growing leisure activity in the Western World. India too has not lagged behind. Cities like Ahmedabad and bigger metros are seeing the change happening. One such big change is the promotion of cycling by the government in form of cyclothons. We also witnessed the cross country cycling in the form of Tour de India ( http://www.tourdeindia.asia/ )
When you start to ride your bike, you have deliberately chosen a fitter and healthier lifestyle. You have chosen to be practical and self-sufficient. what's more, you have chosen to have fun.
